Introduction

Program History and Contextualization

The Graduate Program in Computing (PPGComp) at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) was created in 2012 with the Masters in Computer Engineering. The program seeks to offer intense training in Computing, preparing its graduates to deal with complex problems through algorithmic solutions and efficient implementations.

The Master in Computer Engineering has been proposed based on: (i) FURG's experience in training human resources in Computer Engineering; (ii) the quality, quantity, and maturity of its academic staff, and (iii) high demand for research and training of human resources to solve complex engineering problems. The core of the studies lies in the development of algorithms and their effective and efficient machine implementations, mainly to solve problems requiring tailored computational solutions.

Mission:
PPGComp's mission is to train professionals capable of carrying out quality research relevant to society in several Computing related areas. In addition, research students are trained to develop new computing-based technologies, mainly applied to Engineering scenarios.

Goals:
- Develop relevant quality research in the two main areas:
         i. investigation of algorithms and their efficient implementations;
         ii. development of computational devices for complex problems;
- Offer basic and advanced classes in the areas covered by the course;
- Publish research results in forums of higher quality and in high impact journals recognized in the lines of research, as well as carry out scientific dissemination of these results;
- Offer the possibility of exchange of students and researchers with institutions of recognized quality in Brazil and abroad;
- Promote regional and national development through the identification of demands for efficient computing devices, generating results that can be transferred to society;
- Collaborate in a network with other programs and teaching and research institutions in an interdisciplinary way;
- Foster the area of Computer Engineering in the country.

PPGComp goals are in line with the Institutional Development Plan of the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) from 2019 to 2021, which in its Axis II - Postgraduate Teaching, defines as one of the general objectives to seek excellence in stricto sensu graduate courses. This alignment strengthens the integration between the university, the course, its researchers, and students.
